Welcome!

We will be working with three databases to get your country's trade data.

1) OTEXA

-Office of Textiles and Apparel, part of U.S. Dept. of Commerce, International Trade Administration

-Download 2 files: imports in Units and in Dollars

 

2) US Trade Dataweb

-Provided by the U.S. International Trade Commission

-Download 2 files: imports of knitted (61) and non-knitted (62) clothing

 

3) UN Comtrade Database

-Commodity trade data provided by the United Nations.

-This database only allows you to download 5 years at a time. Download exports (from assigned country to USA) for clothing (84) and textiles (65) for five year increments.

Let's begin!

OTEXA is the first website you will use today. You will download two spreadsheets from this website.

Click on the link above.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Select the following:

  • Your assigned country
  • "In Units"
  • "Excel Spreadsheet"
  • The necessary Additional Years. (The query automatically includes the most recent two year).

 Click Submit

After you clicked submit, you should get a page stating the spreadsheet was created.

Click on the link "click here to download"

 Open the Excel spreadsheet

If Excel won't let you edit the file, copy and paste the data into a blank workbook. 

Keep Category 1 (apparel) and 2 (non-apparel). Delete the other rows.

Go back to the query screen, OTEXA.

Select your country, "Excel Spreadsheet", and any necessary Additional Years. 

Change "In Units" to "In Dollars".

Click Submit to get your second spreadsheet

Open the Excel spreadsheet

If Excel won't let you edit the file, copy and paste the data into a blank workbook.

Keep Category 1 (apparel) and 2 (non-apparel). Delete the other rows.

Now, you are done with OTEXA.

Side note: Go through your excel spreadsheet and add commas to the number to understand the full amount.

US Trade Dataweb is the second website you will use today. You will download two spreadsheets.

First, you will need to create a free account.

Click on the person icon at the top right corner to create a free account to access this database.

 

Click on "Create an Account"

Enter an email address, username, password, full name, and organization (Cal Poly Pomona). 

Check the Your Organization category "Educational or Charitable institution"

Check the Agency category "Other U.S. Federal, State, City or Other Government"

Click on "Create Account"

Now, that you have an account, let's create a new data request.

Click on "New Data Request"

In the menu options, select "New Data Request"

With U.S. Trade Dataweb, we will first download data for knitted clothing (61). Then we will search for non-knitted clothing (62).

 

STEP 1: Trade Flow and Classification System

Classification system: HTS Items

Data to Report: (Customs Value)/(First Unit of Quantity)

Data Format: In 1,000

Years: Check all the years that apply

Timeframe Aggregation: Annual

Check the option: Select Individual Countries

In the country list, select your country.

You will notice it pops up on the right hand side under the box "Selected Countries".

Check the selection: Select Individual Commodities

Enter the commodities: 61

Commodity Aggregation Level: HTS-10

Commodity Aggregation: Aggregate All Commodities

STEP 5: Programs

Select "Use All Programs"

Import Program Aggregation: Aggregate All Import Programs Together

 

STEP 6: Rate Provisional Codes

Select "Use All Provision Codes"

Provision Code Aggregation: Aggregate all Rate Provision Codes Together (Default)

Step 5 & 6

STEP 7: Districts

Select: "Use All Districts"

STEP 8: Report Layout

For this step you could leave everything as default

COLUMN ORDER

Select: Countries, then Units

COLUMN SORT ORDER

1st Sort By: 1st Sort By

OTHER COLUMN OPTIONS

Select: Display Percent Change Column

ROWS

Select "Show All"

After all the selections are made, click "View Results"

Now, it's time to get the report for Commodity 62

Select "Edit Request"

All the information will be saved from your previous request.

Go to STEP 4: Commodities

Change commodity number 61 to 62 

Select: Verify

All the other selections should remain the same. However, it doesn't hurt to double check. You can go back to the beginning of the US Trade Dataweb by clicking on the guide navigation and selecting "US Trade Dataweb".

After you verify that all the fields are correct, scroll down to the bottom of the request and select "View Results"

To verify that the commodity was changed. Click on "Show Details" and you will see the commodity listed:

After you download this report you will have two reports 1) one report for knitted clothing (61) and 2) one report for non-knitted clothing (62). 

NOTE: The data is in 1,00 dollars per unit of quantity

For instance, in 2008, it cost on average $14,160 ($14.16x1000=$14,160) to import all first quantity units in dozen pairs (i.e. dozen pair of socks, dozen pair of pants)

You'll want to do this math when reporting on your data.

UN Comtrade is the third website you will use today.  You will download two spreadsheets from this website.

Click on the link above.

In this database, you will download data for clothing (84) and textiles (65) exported from your country to the USA.

You can download 5 years of data at a time.

If you need more than 5 years of data, download the other remaining years in 5-year increments separately.

Click on "Get data" or click on the arrow and select "extract data"

Make the following selections:

1. Type of product & Frequency

Type of product: Goods

Frequency: Annual

2. Classification

HS: "As reported"

SITC: "Rev. 3"

BEC: 

3. Select desired data

Periods (year): Up to five years

Reporters: Deleted "All" and insert your country

Partners: Deleted "World" and insert "USA"

Trade flows: Deleted "All" and insert "Export"

SITC Rev. 3 commodity codes: Delete "Total of all SITC Rev. 3 commodities" and insert

"65-Textile yarn, fabrics, made-up articles, n.e.s., and related products"

"84-Articles of apparel and clothing accessories"

 

Once you've made all the selections, click on "Download CSV"

Click on "Get data" or click on the arrow and select "extract data"

Make the following selections:

NOTE: 

You'll notice your reports have recurring dates.  This is because both commodities are listed together.

You'll want to separate them. I recommend you add all the years together by commodity to understand the data better.

DISCLAIMER: Your country might not have data for certain amount of years.  Make sure to address that in your report.
